n-tier application

An application distributed among three or more separate process, which may reside on separate computers in a distributed network. The most common form of n-tier is the 3-tier application, in which user interface programming is in the user's computer, business logic is in a more centralized computer, and needed data is in a computer that manages a database.

NAT

Short form of Network Address Translation. The process of translation of an Internet Protocol address (IP address) used within one network to a different IP address known within another network.

NetBEUI

Short form of NetBIOS Extended User Interface. An extended version of NetBIOS. It formalizes the frame format, which is the arrangement of information in a data transmission that was not specified as part of NetBIOS.

NetBIOS

Short form of Network Basic Input/Output System. A program designed by IBM to allow applications on different computers to communicate within a local area network (LAN).

NetPC

An industry specification for a low-cost personal computer designed for businesses and their network applications. A Net PC, also known as a thin client, is intended to be centrally managed and only have basic I/O. It is designed to support specific business tasks and applications. Typical uses for Net PCs would be online transaction processing (OLTP) applications, retail point-of-sale, and banking services.

NetWare

A widely installed network server operating system designed by Novell. Netware is a very successful product in large and small office local area networks (LANs), and also as part of larger and heterogeneous networks, including the Internet.

newsgroup

A place for discussion about a particular subject consisting of notes written to a central Internet site and redistributed through Usenet (a worldwide network of news discussion groups). Usenet uses the Network News Transfer Protocol (NNTP).

NeXT

A computer company formed by Steven Jobs, one of the founders of Apple Computer, and also the name of the advanced personal computer or workstation that the company developed and first offered in 1988.

NIC

NIC is short form for Network Interface Controller. It is a computer circuit board or card that is installed in a computer so that it can be connected to a network.

NNTP is short form of Network News Transfer Protocol. It is used by computer clients and servers for managing the notes posted on Usenet newsgroups.

A prominent network software company which is founded in 1983.

NTSC is short form of National Television Standards Committee. It is responsible to develop set of standard protocol for television (TV) broadcast transmission and reception in the United States in 1953.
