An Open Forum
" The Hong Kong Air Cargo Industry at the Crosssroads"

organized by
Center of Cyber Logistics

China's imminent accession to the WTO and direct links between Taiwan and the Mainland imply that Hong Kong's air cargo industry is entering an era of unprecedented competition and opportunities. On the one hand, the industry faces narrow margins, stringent requirements on quality and reliability, global trends of consolidation and alliances, and entry of strong and powerful foreign competition. On the other hand, further opening up of the Mainland market will result in higher traffic volume and trigger increased demand. It is hence crucial that a high value-added, fully logistics-integrated and IT-supported system be put in place to maintain Hong Kong as the transportation hub in Asia.

The Center of Cyber Logistics foresees the need of bringing the issues into focus for the industry and the government to discuss in a collaborative environment. Thus, the Center initiates this open forum for all constituents in the air cargo industry to exchange ideas and opinions on imperative issues. With that, the Center will press on with investigation to provide constructive policy and recommendations to the government and the industry alike.

The agenda of the forum will include reviews of current air cargo trends in the Greater China region, and a discussion of the recent development of the open sky policy. An overview will also be provided on the existing information technology infrastructure and the future needs for the air cargo industry to compete in the e-commerce era. The forum will conclude with a roundtable discussion on common issues that are confronting the industry today.
